Talk about horsepower!  If you’re looking for a budget friendly vacation that won’t break your fuel budget, we’ve got just the getaway for you! Whether you are planning a romantic getaway for two, a reunion with friends, or a family vacation, there’s no place better than Chincoteague  and Assateague Islands!

You’re in for a real treat when you arrive at coastal Virginia or Maryland in your new car from Atlantic Auto Group! The whole family will delight to see wild horses roaming free, splashing across the waters edge along the island shores and galloping through the emerald green grass fields.  It’s a truly unforgettable experience. Check it out on today’s blog and let us help you plan your visit!

If you’re looking for sandy beaches and wild horses gallivanting along the shores, Assateague is going to be a surefire hit!  Assateague island is a 37-mile barrier island off the Atlantic Island coast with 2/3rds located in Maryland and ? in Virginia. Thanks to coastal weather patterns and ocean waves, the everchanging of Assateague Island means no visit is ever the same twice!  Assateague Island National Seashore is great for those who travel with Pets in tow, as you’re allowed to bring them along for the 15-mile round trip walk of the Island; Assateague State Park does not allow pet companions on the grounds.

You can start by exploring the Assateague Island National Seashore and Assateague State Park. Bring your photography gear, binoculars, and video equipment so you can capture the majestic wildlife such as the Wild Horses of Assateague!  (Be sure to read and note all of the recommended safety tips and don’t try to pet or ride any of the wild animals.)

Explore the scenic Assateague Lighthouse and get up close and personal with some nautical history.  In addition to exploring nature conservation, wildlife, and marine biology activities, the scientists in your family will love visiting the NASA Wallops Visitor Center.  Narrated historical tours via the Pony Express Trolley Tours make a great choice for site-seeing while resting your feet from all of the walking and bicycling you’ve been doing.

If you prefer to be on the water as opposed to swimming in it or sunning along its shores, we’ve got just the thing.  There’s plenty of maritime and nautical activities to enjoy,  with options for lowkey relaxation or for the thrillseeking adventurer! Book a boat tour with Miss Ocean City for a day of fishing, and sail the high seas along the coastline!  Enjoy an afternoon of Kayaking with rentals from Ayers Creek Adventures.  There are numerous venues as well for jetski rentals, or boat rentals. If you’re seeking an adrenaline rush you can even book a parasail with Paradise Watersports, or go Skydiving!  And no oceanside retreat is complete without a traipse acrosst he boards!  Less than 10 miles away from Assateague Island National Seashore is the beloved Ocean City Boardwalk with food and games along the pier that the whole family will enjoy.

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a land preserve of 14,000 acres and is home to an incredible variety of fish, birds, plants, and of course the world famous wild ponies.  You can sign up for a Pony and horse Tour and get a guided look at the grounds and majestic steeds! There are six different trails to check out at the refuge, giving you lots of room to run, bike, walk, and explore.  And Anglers will love that the area is great for crabbing and fishing, too, with ample opportunities for boat rentals, fishing gear, and bait and tackle shops. We also recommend a stop off at The Museum of Chincoteague, the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance, and even the Chincoteague Island Library - perfect rainy day activities!  And if you’ve had enough of the great outdoors, consider a history and heritage tour of the area from Teaguer’s Tump Tours, and get a good look into the history of the Island.

Looking to enjoy a little art and culture on your excursion? Be sure to check out the Tryfan Gallery,  Chincoteague Cultural Alliances “Artful Flea Market,” Osprey Nest Art Gallery, Sundial Books, and Flying Fish Gallery just to name a few!  You might also enjoy the nearby breweries, vineyards, and wineries along the coast such as Chatham Vineyards & Winery, Windmill Creek Vineyards & Winery, Bordeleau Vineyards & Winery, Black Narrows Brewing Company, etc for a little local flavor.
