Road Trip Guide for Parents: Entertain Your Kids for FREE with These Travel Games
“Are We There Yet?” “I’m Bored!” “MoOoOoOommmmm they’re hitting me!” “Dad dad dad dad dad…I'm hungry.”
We’ve all been there! Those long hours in the car on the way to your destination can be quite a daunting experience for parents, but let's face it, when all is said and done, Family Vacations are memories made together to last a lifetime. So why not make the journey there just as fun as the vacation itself? We’re bringing you a great list of games that are 100% FREE and don’t require much of anything, making them the perfect option for travel.
Let our tips and tricks help you fret less and have more fun with your family on the road. Check it out on today’s blog!
The Classic License Plate Game:
One family member agrees to be the records keeper for the drive. The goal is to spot a license plate from all 50 states in the US, with bonus points awarded to anything from Canada! When you reach your destination, the family member with the most points wins. If your vacation involves a lot of driving from place to place, you can even extend the game to track through your whole trip for extra fun! When you get back home you can tally up the scores and see who won.
The Alphabet Game:
This can be played in teams with the whole car, or your backseat passengers can play individually. Each person looks out the window of the side they’re seated on. The goal of the game is to spot letters of the alphabet on road signs along the route in order from A to Z. The first person to get to the end of the alphabet first is the winner! For a fun twist and a harder challenge for older players, you can even start backwards from Z to A!
The Classic Game of Telephone:
This works best with a large group of travelers and especially with younger kids. One player begins by whispering a sentence in the ear of another passenger, who whispers it along word-for-word as close as they can remember to the next passenger, and so on and so forth until you reach the last person who hasn’t heard it. That person then repeats the story aloud and everyone can enjoy the goofy end result of that sentence.
“Backseat Driver Taboo!” Game:
This is a fun variation on the classic game “TABOO!” but without the need for cards and buzzers. Before you depart on your journey, you’ll come up with a list of phrases, names, or words that are “off limits” for speaking aloud. Any time someone says the out of bounds phrase, they’re awarded a point. The goal is to arrive at your destination with the lowest possible points! (Bonus for parents: this game is great for covertly thwarting “Are We There Yet?” and “How Much Longer?!” and similar patience-dwindling phrases, which means everyone wins in the long run, haha!)
