Today is National Chinese Language Day! And we’re going to teach you some key words in Chinese, some fun facts about the language, and some of our favourite local eateries and businesses. Check out these fun facts you can share with your friends over a delicious hot pot or noodle dish at dinner!

Fun Facts:

Did you know that Chinese is the most used native language in the world? Wow!
Did you know that it’s also one of the hardest languages to learn for native English speakers? There aren’t many similarities between the two languages, and they have completely different writing, grammar, and pronunciation styles. There are thousands of characters to learn, but you need to learn an average of about 3,000 of them for it to be considered fluency.
Did you know that Chinese language changes based on tones? Depending on the tone and inflection you use to pronounce them, the five tones can change the meaning drastically. It can be very hard for non-native speakers to adapt to this.
Did you know there are hundreds of dialects/languages under the umbrella of Chinese? The most common two that we hear of are Mandarin and Cantonese, but many people speak more than one!
Did you know that China has been and still is the world’s largest automotive manufacturing country worldwide? Over 30% of global vehicle production happens in China, producing more than 20 million passenger cars in 2021 alone!
Did you know that Ma Qungua is the most famous racecar driver from China? He became the first Chinese driver to win an FIA World Championship race when he won the 2nd race in the 2014 FIA WTCC Race of Russia.
