We’re fast approaching the start of the school year, and some have already started. But it’s never too late to start your own family back to school traditions. We’ll be covering some of those on today’s blog, but first we’d like to remind all drivers of these important back to school safety tips. This list will also be a great guide for new drivers as they head out on the road.
Back to School Driving Safety Tips
-
Leave extra time for yourself on your morning and afternoon commutes. School zone traffic patterns may lead to heavy delays and traffic.
-
Stay alert. Lower your radio. Put your cell phone away and don’t text or post to social media while driving.
-
Remember to reduce your speed especially during morning and afternoon school hours! Between 6AM and 9AM and between 12PM and 3PM are prime pickup/drop-off and bussing hours for youngsters.
-
Stop for all school busses and leave plenty of room for children to exit and disembark safely. Be on the lookout for children coming around and behind the bus as well as parents and other children coming to greet them. Do not roll up slowly or resume driving until the stop sign for the bus has folded back in and the bus has begun moving again.
-
Pay attention to crosswalks, intersections, and sidewalks, especially nearby schools and childcare facilities. Be ready to stop on a dime, and remember to strictly obey traffic laws in school zones. Look for crossing guards, and be wary that children may still dart into the road to cross without waiting for them.
-
Keep an eye out for scooters and bicycles as children and teens make their way to school and back. Give three feet of distance between yourself and cyclists for maximum safety.
-
Watch out for children standing in or near the roadway whilst waiting for their busses. Bus stops may not be clearly marked, and there may be groups of children who are playing and aren’t paying attention. Be vigilant. They may emerge from behind parked cars.
