Today is National American Beer Day and we’d like to share a list of great local businesses that could use your support.  If you’re purchasing beverages for holiday shindigs, consider ordering from these fine local establishments and shopping small.

Local brewing enterprises help the local economy immensely by contributing local property and sales tax, and those tax dollars help fund city projects, schools and education services, and road improvements.  In addition, they provide a valuable source of tourism for the area since visitors also book local lodging options, explore local shopping, and enjoy local restaurants.  Many small breweries also host tasting events that include open mic nights, small art shows or vendor markets, and many even hire musicians to perform and small independent artists to create beautiful murals or public artworks.  Lots of businesses also choose to host holiday parties or networking events at breweries as well as local groups for social meetups.

Some breweries include specialty brews made with locally sourced ingredients such as fresh local honey, local fruits and berries, or even partner with local catering companies and farms for joint events!   Brewery tasting events are also a great way to provide customers with new and interesting concepts in food and beverage, while also monitoring alcohol consumption and ensuring a customer’s safety on the road post-event.

These are just some of the wonderful ways that breweries keep the local area hustling and bustling with community participation and make a positive impact.  As you can see, small brewing companies and tasting rooms are a valuable part of our community.  So check out some of the options on our list and help support our local businesses and neighborhoods right here on Long Island!

Remember, when attending local breweries and beer tasting events, ensure that you plan ahead to have a Designated Driver.  Consider using a rideshare service or taking public transportation instead of driving to events.  If you’re traveling any distance to visit one of these breweries, consider planning an overnight visit instead of driving home afterwards while intoxicated.  Driving drunk is never the right choice.  Buzzed driving is still drunk driving, so remember to drive sober or you’ll get pulled over.

In support of our customers and safe driving standards held by Hyundai, we wish to also take a moment to remind you all that drinking and driving is never a good idea!  So we’d like to share some sobering facts to keep in mind and remember to always ensure your party has a Designated Driver when attending beer tastings or brewery event days.

  • Drunk Driving causes more than 10,000 deaths every year and ? of all traffic related deaths.

  • Drinking and driving costs over $40 billion in deaths and damages every year.

  • Drivers aged 21 to 24 account for 27% of alcohol related fatalities, followed by 25% for ages 25 through 34.

  • In New York State, the legal Blood Alcohol limit is .08, and anything registering about that BAC level means a driver can be arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence/Driving While Intoxicated, which carries a fine of anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000.
