Speaking Our Language: Automotive Terminology
and Industry Insider Terms

Since buying a car isn't part of our daily or weekly lives, most people aren't familiar with all the terminology.

We're here to help decipher it, so here's your Secret Decoder phrase: A/C Compressor.

A/C Compressor: This is an engine-driven pump for the air conditioning system which increases the pressure of the refrigerant.   It is powered by a drive-belt connected to the engine’s crankshaft.  Then the system pumps it into the condenser, converting it from a gas to a liquid.   It’s the central part of the system that keeps you cool while driving!

When to Service:  Make sure to have your AC evaluated each time your car goes in for regular service and maintenance, but repairs and recharging are generally performed on a 3 to 5 year schedule.  Refer to your vehicle’s manual for specifics.  A failing AC Compressor will often make a very loud noise when switched on.  In addition, a damaged compressor won’t be able to regulate the flow of refrigeration fluid and the resulting outflow of air won’t be as cold as usual.

Each vehicle’s cost will vary, but the average is between $200 and $300 for service on an AC Compressor.  Avoid costly repairs by maintaining regular check-ups and fixing any leaks or issues as they arise.  Many times it is more affordable to replace the whole unit.
