Great Ways to Celebrate Life with Local Senior Citizens
-
Spend time with your extended family and especially elderly loved ones. Time is fleeting, and there’s no time like the present to get to know our family! Consider taking a special trip or making a phone call to reach out to elderly family members. Ask them how they’re feeling, what’s new and exciting, and reminisce with them about days gone bye.
-
Revisit your roots with a family tree project. Modern day families are often spread out all over the world, and it can be hard to stay connected with your family’s history and roots. Why not make it a big family project, and get to know your familial history by asking senior citizens in your household or family to help you trace your lineage.
-
Volunteer at a local senior center or nursing home. If you don’t have any older loved ones to care for in your life, why not forge some beautiful friendships with those in your local area? Taking some time out of your hectic schedule to give back to the community at a local senior center or nursing care facility can bring so much light and joy into the world! Do you have a creative hobby that can easily be shared with others? Do you have an affinity for classic films? Consider reaching out to local facilities and have an in-person or virtual class, or host a movie night, or plan some activities! Not your speed? You can also volunteer to help run events, serve meals, help monitor crowds at events, chaperone seniors for day trips or excursions, etc. There are lots of ways to help local Senior Citizens!
-
Offer to help Senior Citizens in your neighbourhood and community with chores, landscaping, errands, and transportation. Check on your neighbours and local friends, and reach out to them to see if help is needed. It can be difficult for seniors to get out in extremely hot or cold weather, and offering to do some grocery shopping, household chores, outdoor maintenance, or even driving them to and from essential appointments or to the pharmacy can be lifesaving gestures. Consider also bringing a meal or a snack to your senior citizen neighbours as a friendly reminder that you care!
